Every independent business owner needs insurance, and truck drivers and logistics drivers are no different. Let’s face it, if you’re driving a truck long distances, there are a lot of things that can happen, including accidents, loss of cargo, and so much more. The good news is that the right transportation insurance covers all of these losses so that you can feel more confident as you drive from one location to another. Following are seven main types of coverage for transportation workers.

1. Dry Van Insurance

Hauling dry goods is often less of a risk than other types of transportation services, but that doesn’t mean you don’t need insurance. Whether you’re driving your dry van across the city or across the country, you’ll need the necessary coverage for both the truck and the cargo on the inside of the truck. There are just too many things that can go wrong when you’re on the road like this.

2. Auto Hauler Insurance

Auto haulers are huge tractor-trailers that usually weigh 50,000–80,000 pounds when they’re loaded with five-and-nine vehicles, which are much higher and wider than standard vehicles. The risk exposures alone can make you nervous about taking off in one of these tractor-trailers, and the owner-operators of auto haulers need this type of transportation coverage.

3. Oversized Trailer Insurance

When your load is very wide or heavy, you have to make sure it is very secure. And getting from Point A to Point B can be a challenge as well. Let’s face it, the bigger the truck and the load, the more potential challenges you face, which is why you need to be fully insured at all times. You also have to obey the laws of the Canadian government, and the right insurance policy can help with all of these things.

4. Tanker Insurance

Whether you are transporting toxic or nontoxic goods, this type of insurance will cover you against spills, leaks, breakdowns, collisions, and theft. More specifically, the insurance covers the cost of the cargo, which can be quite an expense if you have to pay for it out of your own pocket. It also protects against cleanups, property damage, and lawsuits.

5. Livestock Transport Insurance

This is a specialized type of transportation insurance and a very important one to have. Transporting livestock has to be done in a timely and very safe manner, and since rural Canadian roads can be rather tricky and dangerous, it makes having the proper insurance even more important. There are a few more things to worry about when you’re transporting live animals, but this insurance can put your mind at ease with all of them.

6. Container Transport Insurance

When companies ship cargo in containers, it presents somewhat of a challenge when it comes to safety and delivery times. Since the process involves many different steps, you never know exactly who will be handling these containers at any given point, which is why you need this insurance in the first place. It’s not only the cargo but also the truck you have to be concerned about, but the right insurance can give you the peace of mind you deserve.

7. Temperature-Controlled Trailer Insurance

The problems that could arise with this type of truck are obvious. So many things can go wrong when you’re transporting items in a temperature-controlled situation, so the type of insurance you have makes a huge difference. Perishable items such as food and pharmaceuticals have to be transported a certain way because if something happens to them along the way, you could lose hundreds or even thousands of dollars that you’d have to pay yourself without insurance.
